Thanks!

After the polling closed at 7:20 p.m. on March 29th, the proposed amendment to change the Co-op’s bylaws by increasing Board membership from a static number of seven to a range of seven to 15 members was approved unanimously. Voter turnout was equally impressive with more than 20 percent of our Member-Owners casting a ballot.

The unanimous results clearly indicate the Member-Owners’ appreciation of the reasoning provided by the Board for making the change: 1) create a range to allow greater flexibility in response to leadership needs throughout the life cycle of the business and 2) allows for increasing the overall size of the Board now, opening slots that may be filled with specific skills such as legal, accounting, marketing, etc. We would like to establish a 9-member Board as soon as possible.

Unrelated to the formal proceedings, Board Chair Ben Gaddis announced that he is stepping down from that position. The Board will be electing new officers at one of their future quarterly meetings which are open to Member-Owners. Meeting dates are posted on the website as they are determined. We are in search of a good public meeting space for this purpose. If you have ideas about or can offer such a space, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. We hate to lose him, but his position on the Board will need to be filled around that time. Any Member-Owner is welcome to self-nominate for a Board position. More information will be forthcoming.

Complementing the business portion of the meeting, a celebratory feeling was added with a potluck dinner, complete with trays of delicious dessert donated by Cali’s Natural Foods and lively music performed by the Folka Dots. The combination of fun and information encouraged three folks to become Founding Member-Owners. They each received 2 free movie passes from Brewvies as a thank you for investing in the Co-op. People also had a chance to fill out a survey to help the Board improve the Co-op’s message. We strongly encourage you to complete the survey. Feedback from you, our Founding Member-Owners, is important and will help guide our development.

Votes will be counted that evening and the results will be announced during the social hour. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. We will also be highlighting 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, recognizing that cooperatives are serious, successful businesses that keep power in the hands of the people. Co-ops give communities the opportunity to work together to build sustainable businesses that provide jobs and meet the needs of their members. In the words of Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General, "Co-operatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic viability and social responsibility."

The United Nations has declared 2012 as International Year of Cooperatives and we, along with co-ops around the world, are celebrating the occasion. Each year, the United Nations seeks to raise awareness of ideas or initiatives that truly make the world a better place. And while we may be a little biased (as a cooperative representing a virtual chain of food co-ops), we’re thrilled about the opportunity to highlight the many benefits cooperatives bring to their communities. According to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, “Cooperatives are a reminder to the international community that it is possible to pursue both economic vitality and social responsibility.” Read more...
